Preoperative medical care is widely recognized as an integral component of overall surgical case management. Particularly for high-risk patients, perioperative medicine services address major problems relating to medical preoperative evaluation and postoperative care. Establishing an outpatient preoperative evaluation clinic can lead to a rapid shift from inpatient to outpatient surgery without an increase in perioperative morbidity or mortality. Additionally, the number of last-minute or overall surgical procedure cancellations will be minimized. The hospitalist and medical team’s primary goal in such a clinic would be to evaluate and optimize high-risk cases preoperatively. A complete preoperative evaluation will be given by the hospitalist and/or PA, while thorough preoperative education can be given by a nurse. Referrals would be sent in from surgeons performing surgeries on high-risk patients as well as primary care providers of high-risk patients. The hospitalist will also provide consistent in-house medical care for these same patients postoperatively, ensuring the best continuum of care.
